Written by Jaymie and David Atkinson
Jayd Atkinson (James David) was born and raised in Princeton, BC from October 1, 1973 to January 22, 2026. Although he ventured far, his heart was always here.
From the time he was little, through his school years and into his adult life, sports were always a big part of his life.
He participated in hockey from the learn-to-skate days, acting as a goalie in minor hockey in Princeton and Notre Dame and in some adult fun games.
Snowmobiling — from the kitty cat riding around the back yard to his black Polaris Machine — which he’s rode up China Creek, Whip Saw, Lodestone and beyond.
Dirt biking with his yellow YZ through the fat tire bike and on. He rode over the fields to the airport to school or to visit friends, throughout Currie ranch and other adventures a mother doesn’t want to know about.
He skied starting at Snowpatch, Manning Park, and Apex, as well as weekend adventures on other mountains.
He played every school sport that was available to him — from basketball, volleyball and track and field events.
He played football at Notre Dame, one of only a few grade 10‘s that got to play.
He played softball and slow pitch right up until an injury in 2023.
He was an avid golfer starting here in Princeton. He followed up with taking some courses in golf course management and went on to help shaping golf courses in California, Minnesota and shaping on the back 9 of the Princeton golf club. He loved the job they did on hole 15.
Jayd always felt sports taught team play skills, leadership and loyalty. Very important characteristics of his life.
Through the Legacy Fund started in honour of Jayd, our hope is to continue developing these characteristics and qualities for another generation.
