The West Bench neighbourhood of Sparton Dr and East Newton Dr gathered for a BBQ on September 24th for what was a first public social for this small community. As a semi-rural area, neighbours may have less opportunity to interact otherwise, so the event was welcomed by everyone. With just near 40 individuals of all ages in attendance it was very successful. Held outdoors at the street corner it made for an informal and friendly setting. Many of the neighbours were meeting each other for the first time. All families contributed a side dish and the rest was covered by the Community Foundations South Okanagan Similkameen Neighbourhood Small Grant program.
The neighbourhood can now build upon this opportunity and ensure ongoing projects and activities in the future that will pull the small community together. As one of the neighbours stated when some in the group were discussing having an annual event – “Well now the ice has been broken.”
Our community is most grateful to CFSO and City of Penticton for facilitating such events and helping build community.
It is so much more natural to unite people through social interaction than to let issues and differences divide a community.
