Several successful, sustainable activities resulted from past Neighbourhood Small Grant funding for residents on Anarchist Mountain. However, they are primarily attended by women. What about the men in our community? What would appeal to them? How about a cribbage tournament? Cards and competition might be the ticket. And what better culinary delight for those with a Y chromosome than ribs.
Everyone in our mountain community was invited to the event. There was a turnout of 42 lively neighbours representing all of the subdivisions, with more men than women! Sixteen cribbage players, including novices and experts, battled for the top three prizes from local businesses. Those who chose not to join the tournament had fun playing a variety of other games or just had a good visit. Three neighbourhood male chefs manned their smokers for hours to barbeque the meal’s featured ribs. No one left the potluck event hungry, and many left with door prizes and new mountain acquaintances.
Crib, even without the ribs, will hopefully continue to bring neighbours together over the winter.
