In August, I had the pleasure of attending a salsa party on Washington Avenue in my hometown of Summerland. Thanks to a Neighbourhood Small Grant and the Carlson family – who also run local cherry orchards – the street came alive with music, laughter, and the aroma of delicious food.
Held at the close of a fruitful harvest, the event brought together neighbours, friends, and local and migrant orchard workers in a well-earned moment of rest and connection. One touching moment was when workers gathered for a group photo, calling out “¡Venga!” to invite everyone in – a reminder of the bonds built through shared effort.
Some of the salsas featured ingredients from the Carlsons’ community demonstration gardens, showing how small grants can cultivate not only food, but connection.
