First proposed by the Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable David Johnston, issued a challenge – a call to action to build a “Smart and Caring Nation.” Smart & Caring Communities is a national initiative of Community Foundations of Canada. The goal of this initiative is to ensure that every community in Canada is effectively served by a Community Foundation by Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017.
What does this mean for the South Okanagan and Similkameen?
The Community Foundation of the South Okanagan | Similkameen has committed completely to Smart & Caring Communities. We have a dedicated community development officer who works in every community in the RDOS, and supported by local community advisory committee members.
Kim English – Community Development Officer
Kim English is our Community Development Coordinator and she is working hard to build relationships throughout the RDOS. Kim is currently working in the communities of Cawston/Keremeos, Oliver, Osoyoos, Princeton and Summerland to help develop Community Committees that support local granting and Community Fund development.

Better Service to Communities
Kim and the CFSO are helping local citizens establish Committees to build Community Funds and advise on Granting in their own communities, effectively creating “mini-Foundations” in each community.
