“Join me in imagining our country as  it could be…a smart and caring nation, where all Canadians can succeed, contribute, and develop their talents  to their fullest potential.”
His Excellency,
The Right Honourable David Johnston,
Governor General of Canada

First proposed by the Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable David Johnston, issued a challenge – a call to action to build a “Smart and Caring Nation.”  Smart & Caring Communities is a national initiative of Community Foundations of Canada.  The goal of this initiative is to ensure that every community in Canada is effectively served by a Community Foundation by Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017. Today, there’s more than 191 Community Foundations across Canada.

What does this mean for the South Okanagan and Similkameen?

The Community Foundation of the South Okanagan | Similkameen has committed completely to Smart & Caring Communities. We have a dedicated community development officer who works in every community in the RDOS, and supported by local community advisory committee members. The goal is to increase philanthropy in all our communities by growing local community funds, which will provide lasting support for local community needs.

Together, we can make lasting impact.

Local Community Funds

The Community Foundation has set-up Community Funds in Summerland, Penticton, Oliver, Osoyoos, the Lower Similkameen, and Princeton. This means that people have the opportunity to give right where they live!

These community specific endowment funds allow people to turn their generosity into real impact. By combining donations, we can provide lasting support for local community needs.

Better Service to Communities

Kim English – Community Development Officer

Kim English is our Community Development Officer and she is working hard to build relationships throughout the RDOS. Kim is currently working in the communities of Cawston/Keremeos, Oliver, Osoyoos, Princeton and Summerland to help develop Community Committees that support local granting and Community Fund development.

Kim and the CFSOS are helping local citizens establish Committees to build Community Funds and advise on Granting in their own communities, effectively creating “mini-Foundations” in each community.

The CFSOS is committed to building a “Smart & Caring” nation by:
  • Working together to address local needs
  • Inspiring citizens to invest locally
  • Align giving with community needs
  • Multiply a single gift by pooling funds together

We are committed to providing administrative support, marketing expertise, event planning, fund management services, and many other benefits that will help dedicated citizens provide lasting benefit to the towns they love.
