Spay and neuter program breaking cycle of unwanted cats

AlleyCATS Alliance received a $1580 grant from the Community Foundation of the South Okanagan/Similkameen to run an Assisted Spay & Neuter Clinic. The S.N.A.P. Program (Spay & Neuter As Many As Possible), originally set to run for one day on May 29th, was extended until June 12th due to additional support from local veterinarians. As a result, a total of 31 cats from 21 families living in Penticton, Oliver, Okanagan Falls, Cawston, and Keremeos were able to be spayed and neutered.

The population of unwanted cats throughout the Okanagan and Similkameen is very high, as observed by the number of animals processed by various animal rescue groups and the SPCA. Many of these animals are the result of “domestic” street population. One un-spayed female and her offspring can produce up to 420,000 kittens in 7 years.

AlleyCATS Alliance wanted to break the cycle of unwanted pregnancies by helping families who might not otherwise be able to set aside the funds to do this on their own. The goal was to host a low cost spay / neuter clinic with the help of the local veterinarians and volunteers.

AlleyCATS Alliance is a registered charity dedicated to providing rescue, rehabilitation, medical care, and adoption to feral and orphaned cats & kittens throughout the Okanagan Valley.
